STEM CELL TREATMENT FOR AGE-RELATED NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASES AUTHORS

The belief in the inability of neurogenesis, that is the inability to create new neurons after embryonic and early postnatal development of the central nervous system, was rejected in the mid-nineties, when the existence of neurogenesis in restricted areas of CNS adult mammals, including humans, was discovered.Transplantation of stem cells or their derivatives into respective tissues or organs is considered as one of the most promising remedies for many incurable diseases. In this review, we summarized current knowledge and present and future perspectives andchallenges regarding stem cells treatment for Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, as the most common age-related neurodegenerative diseases.

Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures as a frequent diagnostic problem

Introduction: Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures represent a paroxysmal event followed by a sudden change of behavior, cognition or consciousness, mostly of short duration, which resemble or can be understood as epileptic seizures. They occur in persons without epilepsy and in patients with epilepsy. They are not associated with abnormal EEG discharges because their cause is a psychic disorder. Case report: A 20-year-old patient has been suffering of occasional “morning short-lasting jerking hand movements, staring and fainting” since the age of 14 years. Beside a symptomatic anamnesis for epilepsy and non-specifically changed standard EEG, antiepileptic therapy (valproate and lamotrigine) was introduced. Because of non-response to antiepileptic therapy, the patient was forwarded for further clinical examination involving video EEG telemetry, which indicated that this was a case of psychogenic non-epileptic seizures. A successive withdrawal of antiepileptic drugs was initiated, and also, a psychologist and psychiatrist were included into treatment, which resulted in the reduction of seizures and improvement of the patient's general condition. Conclusion: Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures represent a frequent diagnostic problem requiring team's work, while the video EEG telemetry is the method of choice for diagnosis.

ß-ćelije Langerhansovih ostrvaca pankreasa i hepatocite).

ASSOCIATED OCULAR FINDINGS IN PATIENTS WITH OCULAR CONTUSION WITH HYPHAEMA

Ocular contusion followed by hyphema is very common ophthalmologic problem. Aim: to determinate basic epidemiologic characteristics, comorbidity of other ocular findings, as well as complications associated with different grade of hyphema. Method: 55 patients with hyphema and ocular contusion were examinated. Results. Male had hyphema almost four times more often then women (80%:20&); workers (34.5%), afterward pensioners (20%) and pupils (18.2%) were the most often injured. The most frequent causes were the wood (43.6%), stone (10.9%) and vegetable foreign body (9.1%), The first grade of hyphema was demonstrated at 30 patients (54.5%), the second at 16 (29.1%), the third at 6 (10.9%) and the fourth at 3 (5.5%). The most frequent associated ocular findings regarding to segments were the following : haematoma palpebrarum, subconjunctival hemorrhage, erosio corneae and haemophthalmus. Secondary glaucoma was the most common ocular complication and it was finding at one patient with the first stage of hyphema but at all patients with the fourth grade of hyphema. Conclusion: grade of hyphema is directly proportional with a grade of ocular complications and frequency of associated ocular findings.

HISTOPATOLOGICALAND CLINICOMORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MALIGNANT TUMORS OF THE SKIN

Malignant tumors of the skin (MTS) are between the most common malignant tumors at human population. Because of their similarities, and more important, their dissimilarities, it is very important to determinate histophologycal type, grading and staging, because they are the most important factors of therapy choise and prognosis. The aim of our work was to examine those parameters, and also to define sex, age and locations distribution, as well as the value of surgical treatment. We analysed biopsy material of Institute of pathology, Medical faculty Priština from 2004-2007. year. We found that squamocellular carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and malignant melanoma (MM) were more common at older persons, about 2x more common at male, little bit younger at persons with BCC and MM than SCC. The most common location was skin face; at persons with SCC and BCC significant more common than on all other skin locations. SCC was more common below, and BCC was more common on skin face above imagine line from tragus to the same side lips corner. Average size was about 1,5 cm, and macroscopic they were ulcerous, verrucous and infitrative. Invasive SCC was diagnosed in 2/3 cases in the most early stadium. In opposite MM was diagnosed in late stadium in majority cases. Moderate inflammatory infiltrate was found in most cases of all MTS. MTS was adequate removed in the most part cases.

COMPLICATIONS OF BRONCHIECTASIS

On autopsy material of fifty corpses, age 0-75 (Institute for Pathology of Medicine Faculty in Belgrade and KBC
Dragiša Mišović - Dedinje, Beograd) we have met with all kind of comlications of bronchyectazia and bronchyloectazia
which were mentioned in literature. All statement complications, which caused death, we classified into lung and out lung
ones. Among lung complications, we stated that pneumonia among children in a big number of cases of congenital
bronchyectazia and cystic fibrosis of lungs. The apses of lungs were represented in four cases of secular and spindle shaped bronchyectazia and in one case of distal secular bronchyectazia it was represented in empiem pleure. In two cases lung gangrene was noted. Among out lung complications we can emphasize two cases of sepses of brain Apses. Leptomeningitis was present at one case. Among long-term spread bronchyectazia and bronhyloectasis with chronically manure inflammation and lung abscesses (bronchiectasiae abscendons), we stated the deposit of amiloids in glomerulus's and blood vessel of kidney intersticium as well as in liver and spleen. Chronical lung heart (cor pulmonale chronicum) was the most often complication of bronchyectazia and bronchyloectasia in the middle and older age period of our cases and it had represented the major cause of death.
